I am going to my parents house over xmas and they don't have wireless internet and I was wondering how do I go about using their internet on my laptop? Also I have a network cable - is there anything else I need. :)

    You'll need their permission. :)

If they have dial-up you'll need a 56kbps modem. If they have a broadband modem with only a USB connection you will need a USB port and the modem's software. If they have a modem with ethernet connection you will need an ethernet adapter (regardless of whether they have a router). Your laptop probably already has each of these except for the USB modem software.

Buy them a wireless router for christmas and take it with you. A present for them that you get to use :D.
Sorry I couldnt resist. But really, any of Terry's options will help, otherwise get a router for you or them and set it up.

Or just take your own router. Then both computers can be online.
