Could anyone tell me why I would be prompted to "check my network connection" while trying to download something when I have a cable modem? Thanks!

Could be some malware

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

If after doing the above the problem continues

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
log here.

I tried to check for updates after downloading the products you listed. Each attempt was met with a message saying there was a problem finding a connection, try again later, or an "error in finding the update information for your server." The error message also said "the server may be temporarily unavailable or there may be a conflict with a firewall installed on your pc, or the update information my have gotten corrupted during download." I was unable to get updates from any of them. It's interesting...when I asked my original question about "trouble with my network connection", I was actually trying to download updates but was unable to...that's what prompted me to ask for help! I'll download HiJack This and see what happens. Will it be pretty self-explanatory how to get my log as you suggested I post it? Thanks again for your help!

I went back into Ad-Aware and tried to check for updates again. I hit "connect" but got the same message saying there was an error and could not get updates. AVG error message said to "No connection...check your internet settings", and Spyware Blaster's error message said "error connecting to update server". What is going on with my internet settings that it's preventing me from getting these updates? Thanks!

No problem...you're not butting in...
By 2 anti-virus programs do you mean (sorry for my lack of understanding) Ad-aware and Spybot? Or did you mean something else? Again, sorry...this is all kind of new to me...

Well, usually running 2 programs at the same time that are designed to perform the same functions will always cause trouble. You can run 2, 3 or more Anti-Virus programs on the same system as long as only ONE is running at a time.
With AV programs this means the user must fully know how to turn off each AV's background operations before starting another AV program.
AV programs are especially bad at not playing together very well....usually they'll detect each other's definitions as being a virus and start to quarantine the other's definitions.

I don't know if that's the cause of the network problem itself, but it can definitely cause conflict.
