Network discovery wont turn on

    I saw this question a few times but never saw a good answer. I go to control panel and try to turn on network discovery manually and it will not turn on. I also noticed my windows defender will not turn on manaully either. My computer also wont read anything i put in my usb drive. Please help

    hiya, i tried this earliar and i went to try it again today and it would not list a starting point, when I tried to do one manually, it just kept the same date and did not provide other options.

    click on start and type services in the search box,services will appear at the top -open up by double-click,now go down the list and make sure all these are set as AUTOMATIC-AND STARTED(enbled)

    o Computer Browser
    o DHCP Client
    o DNS Client
    o Network Connections
    o Network Location Awareness
    o Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    o Server
    o TCP/IP Netbios helper
    o Workstation
    o SSDP Discovery
    o System Event Notification Service
    reboot and try now.

    i try to start computer browser and get message that says it stopped and some stop automatically if not in use by other servers or programs :(

    Generally, the reason why a service isn't started is due to service blocked by other programs or service corrupt. To troubleshoot this kind of issue, let's perform the following methods:

    1. Disable security software such as Windows Firewall, anti-virus software and manually start Server service in Services window. Please visit the following website for detail steps:

    2. Try to start Computer Browser service to call for Server service. Computer Browser service is dependent on Server service.

    3. Since the Server service supports file, print, and named-pipe sharing over the network. You can try to reinstall File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks to start the Server service.

    1) Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.

    2) Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.

    3) Click the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click Uninstall.

    4) Click Install.

    5) In the Network Service list, click File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.

    6) Click Close.

    4. Check the permission of Server service in Registry.

    1) Open Registry by pressing WIN + R, typing in regedit, hitting Enter.

    2) Navigate to Server service entry:


    3) Right click on this item and click Permissions.

    4) Add the current user with full control.

    5) Restart the computer and try to turn on Server service again.

    5. If neither of above works, Server service system files may be corrupted. I may need to suggest that perform a System Repair to narrow down the issue.

    Startup Repair


    Note: Please ensure that the DVD-ROM is the first booting device.

    1) Please insert the Windows Vista DVD and reboot the computer.

    2) When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar.

    3) Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

    4) Click Repair your computer.

    5) Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

    6) On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs.

    hi, after trying various solutions offered on different forums I was still unable tu turn on the Network Discovery & Printer and File Sharing.
    I tried the following:
    1. Restoring the firewall and resetting it to default settings
    2. Enabling all the services suggested in other forums
    3. Importing the registry keys from another forum
    4. Running scannow command
    5. Disabling Windows Firewall
    6. Uninstalled AVG free
    7. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials
    8. Uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials

    and nothing!!

    then i had a closer look at the Firewall settings more closely and found a solution:
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
    open Windows Firewall Properties (a green arrow and link in the centre pane)>
    then the properties window opens
    click on private profile and under inbound connections choose Allow in the drop down menu.
    if this does not work change the firewall state to off.
    and solved!:p
