Sorry guys new here. I did a search but couldn't find anything related to what I was looking for. I am getting some unauthorized usage of my network and want to see what is going on.

Here is what I have: 2 routers (one wireless), 3 computers (one being used as a file server with 2 NICs), one laptop with wireless.

What I would like to do is put my file server between the two routers, acting as a bridge, so that all network traffic from the the wireless router has to pass through the server. What I need is some kind of software that will tell me what the traffic is, and where it is going.

Sorry if this not allowed but I didn't think it would against any forum rules. Any help would be appreicated.

I think we can allow this. :) Take a look at WireShark, it'll tell you anything that is passing through a specific Ethernet connection. I'd use a hub between the wireless router and the other part of the network, and just connect another machine running WireShark there. You'll see all the traffic in the hub. Note that I said hub, not switch, this is one place a hub is useful. :)

Thanks for the info, I will give it a try tomorrow morning. One of the guys at work suggested a couple of programs as well so I will give them all a go. Again, thanks for hte reply, and letting the question stay around.

If you're on linux, feel free to try tcpdump and tail -f that baby. :)

Well, I got a little stuck last night setting this up. The second router works, the pc bridge works with the first router, but it doesn't seem to want to pass information through. I got tired and gave up but will try again tonight when I get home from work. I think my problem is that I have to edit the routing tables, but I am not sure if doing that will defeat the wholepurpose of this exercise.

If you are getting people on your wireless connection, you can use MAC address tables and allow only what devices you want to allow.
