I am on a small network, where the printer is connected to a PC (WinXP). The laptop (Vista) is on the network. The printer is an HP Deskjet 5550 that is "shared" on the network.

I installed the Vista drivers for the printer on the laptop.

No issues with connecting to the printer and just plain printing.

My problem is when I want to save ink and alter the printer's printing properties. ( I am usually printing an email or from Word 2007.) So when I go to Print and choose the network printer, then click on Properties... the panel never appears until after I click on "OK" [to print].

I tried to change the settings another way through the Control Panel -- Printer -- [right click network printer] -- Properties.

Under the "General" tab, I click on the "Printing Preferences" button and the panel flickers, like another window was supposed to pop up but doesn't. When I close the network printer properties, I see another panel appear for less than a second then disappears.
