Is it a good idea to have a firewall on each system of a network or is the firewall in the router (Belkin) adequate for the system. If I need a firewall on each system is it important to use the same firewall on all systems?

It is nice to have a software firewall on your PC because it will show you what is going out. If you somehow get a virus or trojan horse it may try and access the internet and the software firewall may prompt you and ask you if you want it to go out onto the internet.

I agree with LwdSquashman, a router's firewall will only block incoming traffic and will do nothing to protect your machine against evilness that might get there via other means like, e-mail attachments, file sharing, and dubious download site. I consider a good firewall and antivirus programs a must.

    Anyway, that's my view.

Thanks for the imput. I have two differant firewalls. Sygate on the desktop and ZoneAlarm on the laptop. The problem with using the firewalls is that I can't seem to find the settings so that the laptop can use the printers connected to the desktop. It will work when the firewalls are off on both systems. How do I get the firewalls set correctly?
