I am having trouble getting my laptop (vista) computer to open my desktop computer (xp) on the network. My desktop will not log onto the network or open the workgroup. It says that it doesn't have the required access and to contact my administrator. My laptop does see the desktop but it cannot open it. Says the same thing, no access. I have run both wizards multiple times. I have disabled all firewalls. I am able to ping by the ip address but when I ping by the name neither one recognizes the name. I have tried to install the update from ms for the xp machine but it says that the update is older than the update already installed. I have read some of the other threads on here. The vista is the only machine that is the master browser. I appreciate your help. I am at the end of my understanding or ability to figure this out. Once again thank you for your help.

PC Chuck's Windows XP And Vista On The LAN Together

In addition, let's see this from each of the two computers.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

    NBTSTAT -n

    IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
