OK, this is really frustrating me. i set the network up in early August and it worked fine - file sharing and 'net sharing. Towards the end of the month, the file sharing stopped working (the computers couldn't "see" each other), but the 'net connection was fine, so i didn't bother doing anything since we don't really use the file sharing. Then a couple weeks ago, the 'net sharing stopped working. i used the network wizard on both machines again, and the 'net connection worked again (but again, no file sharing). Now, the 'net connection has again stopped working. Running the wizard does nothing.

i've looked at different threads and asked a friend of mine for some help to no avail. i bought a new crossover cable which didn't help. i've looked at the IPs and that doesn't seem to work, but i may not be looking at them right. i've also installed the Netbeiu protocol.

Any ideas?

Are there supposed to be two local connections on the XP computer?

I can see why you'ld have problems. Your IP configs are messed up. We need a clarification first. Your message says this is a win 98 comp to XP comp connection using a crossover, yet in your description, you say something about 'net sharing, which indicates these computers can access the internet.

Here is a config to try if these two computers are simply connected to each via a crossover cable: first delete the old LAN configurations. Then on your '98 comp give it these settings:
ip address 192.168.0.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.2
Then on your XP comp give it these settings:
ip address 192.168.0.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

Now I could use a little assistance from someone else. I think you want to make each a member of the same workgroup, then verify that file and print services are shared. Can anyone else verify?

I just got done confirming the config above and it worked. If you use the IP config above, have both computers in the same workgroup, have file and printer sharing service on, and have files actually shared, your mission will be completed.

How do i delete connections? When i try it says, "Connection cannot be deleted." Do i have to disconnect the cables?

Oh, when i was talking about net sharing, i was talking about connection to DSL from the XP computer and sharing the connection to the 98 computer. Which worked before everything went down hill.

Thank you very much for your help so far.

i started to think my network card was faulty (it was) so i bought a new one. However, the problem still persists. The comps can't ping each other, let alone see each to share files or an internet connection. Please help!

New IPs for the XP

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Autoconifuration IP Address: 169.254.150.204
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
Autoconifuration IP Address: 169.254.84.222
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:

PPP adapter SBC Internet

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address: 68.21.7.4
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway: 68.21.7.4

OK, "Local Area Connection" seems to be the "connection" to the internet, kinda. If i disable it, i'm kicked off the 'net. Obviously, SBC Internet is what i use to actually get on. LAC 3 is the connection between computers, which i'm having absoletely no luck with.

They should be able to ping each other regardless of whether or not they can see each other, right? 'Cause i can't.
