New ACER monitor, no sound from external speakers

    My Dad just bought a new ACER flat panel monitor to replace an existing ACER flat panel monitor. The old model had built in speakers the new one does not. I can not get any noise out of the external speakers. Please Help I'm leaving for vacation and I'M desperate

    Make/model of the computer?
    What sound card?
    What kind of speakers?
    How are they connected?
    Make and model of external speakers?

    Check the simple things first, have you plugged the external speaker wire into the microphone jack by mistake ? (more common that you might think !) are the speakers turned on and is the volume turned up ? have you muted the sound or line out or is it even turned up far enough in windows ? when you try to play sounds do you get any error messages or does it look like windows thinks it is playing them ? i

    I agree walk before you run, I have done all the things you have mentioned and I also agree that the mic jack gets a lot of play, but sadly enought it isn't plugged in there. Is there a way to "turn off" the sound card in the software ????
