I purchased a new battery (not a Dell, but from a reputable place. I purchased another battery for my other laptop and it works great) and fully charged it. It's been draining while plugged in!! I think it has something to do with my settings. I don'tknow what else to try and change. The strange thing is that if it completely drains, if I shut down my laptop it will charge to a full charge. What is going on?? Please help!!

Thanks so much!!

Hello!

I suspect that the battery may be defective, but at the same time you are not using a dell battery so that may be playing to that too.

Check the battery health with the command powercfg /batteryreport & battery-report.html in command prompt or powershell. You may be able to try the Dell diagnostics that is in the Boot Menu (F12 before booting to Windows) to see if it recognizes it and see what the health is.

Not sure how to do this in command prompt or PowerShell. When do I hit f12? So confused! I'm not good with computer problems. Thanks for trying to help.

So in the windows search bar, type command prompt and select the Command Prompt option.

Next, copy the command above and press enter. It should open your browser with the report of your battery.

Look at the battery health. Here is an example:

as to the F12 one, restart your computer then start pressing F12 repeatedly. Once you see the Dell logo, on the top right should say entering boot menu. you can stop pressing F12 at this point. Then select Diagnostics and let it run. Once you are done, on the bottom right, I believe you should see an arrow on the bottom right, and that should show the results. It will show the battery charge and health. If you get a warning in the diagnostics about the battery you can still continue to run the test but make sure you notate the error.

I assume it drains when the laptop is on but if the laptop is off, the battery will charge.
There are two reasons for this: a) the battery is the wrong size for the laptop - it can't supply enough power to charge and use the laptop at the same time or b) the charging adapter needs to be replaced.
I just read a thread from 2019 where an HP owner had the same problem. He replaced the charging adapter and the problem was solved.

You should get rid of Norton Security Suite and use Windows 10's built-in antivirus app: Windows Security aka Windows Defender.

Windows 10 can have various issues when using a third party antivirus app, so it's recommended NOT to use one.

Sorry for the delay. It took forever to do the report which I can't access. I did what you said, little box came up with something like this. C:/users:Mindy I guess there's no hope helping. I just can't get anything to work. During the scan, the battery was at 98% the whole time. I'm sorry, I don't want you to waste your whole day. I'll try and figure something out. Thanks so much! I guess unless you're next to me I can't do it!!!!

THIS is the support site for your Dell Inspiron 3737 17.3" laptop.
It was purchased new in February 2014 and came with Windows 8 Home 64-bit.
It came with a 4-cell, 40 watt hours, 14.8 volts, Lithium Ion battery.
You should add and save this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can quickly refer to it when needed.

Scroll down to show all the Installed batteries information, then you can highlight/copy and paste here.

Also, can you confirm if you installed a 40WHr, or a 65WHr battery?

Just an FYI to others, Dell has been removing battery options from their sites for machines, i am guessing due to the pandemic that has slowed down production. A lot of our machines we had to send to the depot to get replaced as they hold stock for warranty repair.

Actually can you just copy the whole report (click on the report, then do CTRL-A then CTRL-C) and then paste it in Word and send the report here. If I am right, then the battery is bad.

Sorry, I was unavailable all day. Earlier I met with the IT guy at work and he gave me 2 dell chargers. I tried one and while plugged in my laptop died. So I just plugged in the other charger which is working great. I purchased a 40 WHR battery. Here is my battery info: Does this tell you anything? I know the chargers work because they both charged and the one didn't continue so I plugged in the other one. That is charging right now. I really think it's my settings. But I'm not computer savy as we know.
