I just got a new computer and I think it should be faster than it is. Wondering if I need to do something or take stuff off. It's an Acer Aspire 7740-5691, 4GB memory, 320 HDD, Intel Core i3 processor with Windows 7. This is a big upgrade for me and think something can be done to make it faster. Especially with flash games. I had a 1BG memory..80 HDD with Vista before. I appreciate any help.

According to Acers website they give you a 90-day trial version of McAfee, so I would uninstall that because McAfee is notorious for being a resource hog. Use AVG, Avira, NOD32 or something else (but not Norton which is also a resource hog).

Acer also gives you a lot of other preinstalled crapware that you can probably do without.

    Thanks for all the info.

I have been using McAfee on my laptop and desktop for years cause you get the free version with Comcast internet. Didn't realize it slowed things down. I have been looking into Antivirus programs. I was told AVG was one of the best by someone who runs a computer shop. Told webroot was good by a friend who knows computers. But when you look up reviews...they all have good and bad ones. The one thing I was told is that the free versions are never enough. That you need to buy the program.

I had already removed items from startup menu.

With the "crapware"...can I not just delete those from control panel? I am sometimes confused on what is necessary or not though. Some things that came with computer I don't want taken off like the games, microsoft works....will that one link take stuff like that off??

AvastHome is good and no matter what AV you have its a good idea to do other scans....take a look in my Sig for atleast 3 free AVs.

You could post your HijackThis log and see what shows up

    Download HijackThis to your desktop
    • Close all open windows
    • Double click on HJTSetup.exe on your Desktop
    • Click Run and Install
    • It will install to Program files by default
    • it will launch Hijack This
    • Click on "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
    • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
    • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

I'm not sure which other AV I want to go with. I can download one that was mentioned just to get McAfee off and see if it makes a difference.

Okay...so McAfee is off now. Is there another name used for firewall? Some of these don't say they have a firewall.

Is there anything that can make flash games slow?

Frank4d - you should check the newer versions of Norton Antivirus and NIS - 2010.
Norton was a resource hog, but now is very light on resources, and highly recommended by many test sites and users.
