I am looking to install Linux on an old machine because I want to see how it runs and looks. I am looking for some simple directions on how to install it and get it up and running. Where can I go to get some clear and simple advice to follow so I can try it and what version of Linux should I use?

    Thanks :)

Any one will do. I would try a Live CD because it can run on a CD without touching your hard disk. Try a few of them and then decide. You can install just one or all of them.

Live CDs are listed and can be downloaded through The LiveCD List (sponsored by Frozentech) at http://www.livecdlist.com/

One of the biggest things which will decide which issue is - how much RAM do you have?

There are a few quizzes about which claim to help you decide which distribution. Perhaps the most widely used is Linux Distribution Chooser at http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/

I dropped an Ubuntu Live CD into my Dell laptop a couple of weeks ago (came in the back of an Ubuntu book). In under ten mins. I was up and running, surfing the web and exploring my first Linux OS. Very cool.
