    My previous laptops: hit windows key, start typing... 4 characters later, instant search results

    For example, I want to add a printer...
    Hit windows, type prin...
    And I see 'Devices and Printers' link

    I get nothing
    When I do a search, it goes away and things for about 45 seconds and hen gives results

    I'm logged in as Admin
    The same happens for many other searched for items
    It's winding me up
    What am I doing wrong?

    It's Windows 8.1 and a HP Pavillion laptop

    Thanks

    OM

    the search is in the righthand side - if you open the charms
    using Windows + C
    or swipe from the right or put mouse on the top right corner

    there are three layers of search, APPS , Settings, Files

    shortcuts Keys for each layer

    Apps: Windows + Q ;
    Settings: Windows +W ;
    Files: Windows + F

    If you download Classic Shell you should be able to hit the Windows key and start typing again. http://www.classicshell.net/. You'll get the normal start button back too.

    You can still just hit the Windows logo key and start typing to search. On this Windows 8.1 when I did that and typed devices one of the choices found was Devices and Printers. When I tried just the four characters prin I got several choices, but Devices and Printers was not one of them.

    My experience has been that while search works, the one in Windows 8/8.1 is inferior to the one in Windows 7. If you are used to the capabilities of a smart phone Windows 8/8.1 works fine. If you are used to Windows 7 on a desktop or laptop Windows 8/8.1 will be disappointing.

    thanks for the replies guys
    it all used to be JUST fine on my old laptop
    i used to scratch my head thinking why people hated windows 8
    in truth, i never actually used it
    all i used to do was hit the windows key, type 2 characters, press enter and my program is launched 2 seconds later (helps having ssd had drive)

    this is pants! either HP or windows have screwed up

    why they go out of their way to stay behind the mac?

    Ok... So I had to setup a brand new laptop for someone. A Lenovo

    It was fine. The search worked great

    It's the damn hp laptop I have. Can't think if it could be anything else
    Rubbish :(
