I just bought a new laptop hard drive to replace my old one. I'm also going to start new and reinstall the OS. My question is, do I have to first initialize the drive before I even put it into my laptop?

Nope, as long as you can boot the Laptop from floppy or cd

If you have recovery CD's or an XP CD, you should be able to boot from the CD and do everything you need to the new drive.

Make/model of the laptop in question, as well as the version of Windows you have would help...

If what you have is an XP CD, you might also make sure you have any drivers for hardware not included with XP. Typically you can look to the manufacturer's web site ahead of time, copy them to a CD or external USB drive, and have everything you need ready.
