I recently formatted both my HD's and booted from the winxp disk to reinstall....Xp first went through a format then into installation--when i got to the create partion screen i didn't change anything just created a new one @ my HD capacity--it the left 8gb of unpartioned space--

i guess what im wondering is this right? because when i have reinstalled win before it had my partition for xp and what i think was like 40-80gb left over--

    8gbs just seems so small

That is not possible. It would not format and then ask you to partition.

I have seen xp leave 8 megs unallowcated when using setup's partitioning tool. As to what the 8 meg is for, I do not know. I just checked one of my disks has the 8 meg unallowcated space and the other [using win2k setup] does not.
