I just purchased this pc a few weeks ago and installed the software I wanted and have uninstalled what I could figure out that was HP load w/ the new pc.
Could you please look at my log from HJT and let me know what security risk I have and what I can clean up to make my machine more efficant.
Here is my 1st log from HJT.
Thank you for your help and patience.
BigAlain

PS I don't use IE, I use Mozilla Firefox for my browser.

hi welcome to TSG!

You can fix all those R1s in hijack this if you don't want to have that link to HP, or keep one and delete the rest!

You can trim down your sartup list a little bit more!

Msconfig

go to start/run/type msconfig/tick the radial dial selective startup/click
the startup tab/ uncheck these boxes then click ok and then exit!

HPBootOp
Reminder
HP Software Update
KBD
HPDJ Taskbar Utility
NeroFilterCheck
ctfmon.exe
Logitech SetPoint.lnk
Printkey2000.lnk
Adobe
Microsoft Office

I would also downlaod and use these tools regularly! Here's some info on setting up and runing them!

Download ewido!

http://www.ewido.net/en/

* Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
* Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
* On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
* Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
* Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
* Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Delete"
* Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

* Click here to download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your desktop.

http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

* Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
* Under Main choose: Select All
* Click the Empty Selected button.
o If you use Firefox:
+ Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
+ Click the Empty Selected button.
+ NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
o If you use Opera:
+ Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
+ Click the Empty Selected button.
+ NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
* Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run Ewido!

# IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while Ewido is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
# Launch Ewido Anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
# Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
# Ewido will now begin the scanning process. Be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
# If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
# Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
# Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
# Close Ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

go to this site and download these tools and once you get both
adaware Se 1.6 and spybot, update both of them.

Set adaware to do a full system scan and deselect, "search for neglible risk
entries". Click next to start the scan. Delete everything adaware finds.

reboot and now run spybot

Spybot: Search and destroy.

Delete what spybot finds marked in red. After updating spybot hit the
immunize button.

reboot again

Go here and download Microsoft® Windows Defender. First in the top menu click
File then Check for updates to download the definitons updates.

After updating look in the right side of the main window under "Run Quick
Scan Now" and click Spyware scan options. In that window put a tick by Run a
full system scan and then put a check by all three options below that then
click Run Scan now.

When the scan is finished, let it fix anything that it finds (have it
quarantine the items that have that option rather than delete just in case.
It is a beta program and there may be false positives)

Restart your computer.

All tools can be downloaded at the link below and found on that page!

To stop infection get spywareblaster from

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html

get the hosts file from here.Unzip it to a folder!

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

put it into : or click the mvps bat and it should do it for you!

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

Winpatrol, protects your computer from hijackers !

http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html

Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it.

I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has
a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds. Mozilla Thunderbird is also a good
e-mail client.

Another good and free browser is Opera!

I am flabbergasted. Thank you very much for the advice.
At this time I am using Firefox for my browser and ZoneAlarm, Spybot, and Symantec Antivirus corp. edition.
I'll use your recommendations, most of those programs you suggested are not free. Will they work ok in the trial version format?
It looks like I'll be busy for the next few days.
Thank you very much for your time

You're welcome! ;)

They are all free, after the 14 day trial Ewido can be used as a limited program which means you don't get auto updates and it's real time protection, but it is a excellent spyware and trojan remover!

All other tools are free or have a free version!
