New program won't open

Antivirus: Windows Defender, Disabled

I downloaded the program StartWrite as the free version from the website http://startwrite.com/ The program was installed and I opened it. It worked for a few minutes when it stopped working properly. Typing on the screen did not respond to the letters being pressed on the keyboard. I closed the program and when I tried it to open it again it just would not open. I double-click on the icon and the program appears to be opening for a few seconds but then nothing happens. It isn't showing in task manager. I have uninstalled, re-installed a few times, and have received an installation CD from the company. Nothing works. The only sign of the program working is a notice that comes up saying the trial version has expired. When I click OK nothing else happens. My partner has a Windows 8 HP laptop as well, but a different model. I installed the program on his PC without a hitch and it works well.
I am really baffled because I have never had this happen before.
