US Robotics router with ethernet and USB cables... I am connected with the ethernet. Can my daughter connect her laptop direct to the router with the USB or do I have to set up a network? Thanks..

She needs to connect through another ethernet port. She cannot use the USB connection.

My cable modem has a USB port and an RJ45 ethernet jack. You can connect a PC to the cable modems USB port but I've never herd of connecting a router to it. My guess is the routers USB port is for connecting a USB hard drive, for NAS. What does the manual for the router say it's for?

You would use the USB cable if you were only connecting one computer to the modem/router and didn't have a network card.

Since you do have a network card and want to connect more than one computer, disregard the USB port, and use the ethernet ports.

You cannot connect a USB hard drive to that port. It won't work.

If both the router and laptop have wireless, use that. It stops all this cable kerfuffle altogether :)
