I am a beginner with tablets and networking. This should be an easy answer.

I have a new tablet. TCL 9020A Android ver 5.0. This is thru At&t network LTE cellular data. My question is, can I use wifi to save on data usage? I have this tablet and Galaxy S5 that both have mobile hotspots available.

Do hotspots use more data? Is there an app available to reduce data usage while on the internet?
Is there any way to get cheaper wifi than paying for tons of data use?

I downloaded the TSG sysinfo utility but my at&t Trek HD would not let me open it. Please advise.

I love this site. I have learned a lot. Thank you.

Yes, if you use your own WiFi network or free WiFi hotspots, you won't be using your cellular data. You can connect to those in your wireless network settings.

I d not have any other service except my wireless data plan w AT&T. My tablet is using the shared data plan and it is eating up my data. I am not close to any other hotspot except my own which eats up my data. I see apps for free wifi routers. Doesn't that still use my data? Sorry I'm new to all this and I don't want to download apps i can't use. I learned not to do that on my Galaxy S5. Please help the Hopeless.

If you don't want to use your AT&T cellular data, then you have to connect to a free wireless hotspot. As an example, Starbucks offers this.

Swipe down from the top of your tablet to get to the Quick settings.
Then in the quick settings drop down menu, there is an option to toggle on/off mobile networks. Turn it off and you will only connect to wifi hotspots.
