On April 24th, Canonical will release Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) LTS (Long Term Support) which you can pick up here, both download and order via snailmail when it gets released.

In the meantime, you can download Gutsy gibbon (7.10) Ubuntu from the same link and burn the bootable ISO file to a CD.

    Take your pick here

I use Vector and Ubuntu and love them.

Look for Ubuntu Ultimate 1.6 and 1.7, customized versions of Ubuntu with lots of preinstalled software for almost everything you re gonna need and with lots of goodies like Envy, Wine and Beryl preinstalled. Be aware this is a big download though, about 1.7 GBs and more depending on version.

I've tried Gentoo, OpenGEU, Ubuntu, Slackware, Puppy, PCLinuxOS, and other distros of linux, Ubuntu is the one that I'm on right now.
    1) Pick your distro at http://distrowatch.com/
    2)Visit the distro's website
    3)Download a liveCD
    4) take it for a test run

If you like it, then install it. If you're still not sure you can do a dualboot. It's that easy.

    Best of luck.
