new to networking

    I just got a cable modem its a motorola surfboard I was wanting to hook up two computers to it. Both computers have ethernet cards one is a 10 the other is a 10/100. I want to know if I need a router or a hub I have been told different things by many people. If I can get by with a hub what one do you recommend

    I would reccomend a switch and a 10/100 switch since you have a mixed network. Run the ethernet cable from the modem to the switch and also both PC's to the switch.

    What Rockn said is correct, but one thing to check out is if your ISP allows multiple connects through your modem. Many ISP's charge extra for hooking multiple PC's to your cable modem. If this is the case with your ISP I would Recommend buying a Cable/DSL router. It will allow you to share your Internet connection with up to 254 other computers. These handy dandy devices are relatively cheep, usually around $60-80, If you figure you have to pay $10 extra a month for the second computer, in only 6-8 months it pays for itself.
