    HELP!

yesterday evening, i switched user in XP and found my account seemingly wiped. What i mean is, it is like a new user acct - no settings, desktop picture gone, no recent docs, try and run a program and it thinks it is the first time it has run, eg winzip.

i have checked the docs and settings folder - it's still my user name, and no new one appears.

worse still, when i try and change some of these new default settings, eg IE home page back to google, it ignores my instruction - in fact no new settings at all will be recognised by IE. I also ran mu usual suite of spyware (spybot, adaware, spyware blaster) and although they found updates and dl'd them, they refuse to be recognised during the immunise process. Anyhow, nothing found.

certain startup progs, eg McAffee virus s/w are not starting.

ATI graphics card s/w not recognised, and display looks "odd". All the keys in the wrong place, ie " and @ have swapped (UK to US switch?)

Thankfully i had My Docs pointing at a second HDD otherwise these may have been overwrote by the new (empty) My Docs it has intalled for me.

The other 2 users are perfectly fine.

I copy below a hijackthis log. Please help me...?

nope - did it, but like many things, the PC will not recognise the change...

I just ran HT again and checked that box, then rescanned and it is still there...

Done it twice more and still won't go.

Follow the link in post #2 and download Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware SE

Update them both and do a scan getting rid of all they find

Do a scan with Housecall and Panda then post another log here please

Jeez... i can't do hardly anything with IE. It's all to do with the new IE settings eg running scipts, activex controls, java, downloading files, etc that it will not permit me to change.

The Housecall link will not open - it is repetitively stuck trying to refresh the page.

The Panda link is fine, but my IE settings do not permit the start of the scan due to activex restrictions (which will not change).

I have alreay run Spybot S&D and Adaware - these are part of my normal protection - nothing found. As stated at the outset, S&D has some new updates which would remained un-immunised despite pressing the immunize button a few times.

I have had to reply to your post on my notebook because IE cannot get passed the log on point to the techguy forum.

    I appear to be $hafted?

On further investigation, I found a new TEMP user, which i believe is created when the normal user profile becomes corrupt.

So i guess, i need to delete my user acct (via another admin users acct) and recreate a new one.

But can i somehow copy all my previous settings somehow, eg copy the profile before deleting and then copying the contents back...?
