I just got an ASUS K55N laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed. After connecting to a trusted network I downloaded ZoneAlarm to complement the pre-installed McAfee trial. ZoneAlarm installed to non-default settings and options in firewall and antivirus have both changed on their own by themselves, such as unchecking "program sends suspicious data" in the behavior scan settings. McAfee blocked a website and had a link to info on the suspicious IP, but clicking on it did nothing.

Within 20 minutes it has crashed 3 times already. I have installed Crome, Opera, Firefox, and ZoneAlarm. The first time it crashed was immediately after installing ZoneAlarm.

I just got this Laptop for christmas, and I wasn't sure of the name of the laptop so I went to System (from right clicking used-to-be start menu button area) and clicked "support information", and this is what I get:

    Manufacturer: ASUSTek Computer Inc.
    Model: ASUS Notebook Serise

ASUS Notebook Serise?? I googled ASUS Serise, and yep its a typo.. If nobody else has this then that means something..

I am totally new to Windows 8, and uneducated in security, but I want to lock this laptop down ASAP..

    Any ideas?

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! ;)

    uninstall Zone alarm immediately
Mcafee trial has an inbuilt firewall so you are causing major system instabilities by having 2 firewalls and make sure that when mcafee was enabled, it disabled the inbuilt windows firewall & windows Defender. A lot of the time they stay enabled as well and cause a major conflict

I have already uninstalled Mcafee as it was only a 5 day trial. I am currently running Avira anti-virus, Privatefirewall, and AntiLogger, but honestly I miss how ZoneAlarm tells me what its blocking and asks me before allowing programs free reign over my computer..

well you can't have 2 firewalls & you have just stated you have private firewall.
You need to make up your mind which security programs that you want & make sure you install only 1 AV and 1 Firewall

Private firewall isn't a traditional firewall but a multi-layered HIPS protection and always clashes with ZA & most antiviruses, because of the way it works
