I opened up an email recently, and without thinking opened the attachment. Immediately I had pop-ups everywhere and Norton and Spysweeper warnings. After I settled everthing down, I re-booted the system and to run some scans to check the system. Upon re-boot the system seemed okay. I tried to open Norton and the system immediately slowed to a crawl, and Norton would not launch. I re-started the system, and again everything was okay. Again I tried to open Norton and again the system locked up. I shut the system down and re-booted in Safe Mode. I ran Norton and Spysweeper. Neither program found anything. Again I re-booted the system in normal mode and again everything was fine. Again I tried to open Norton, and again the system locked up. I opened up Windows Task Manager and noticed that 99 -100% of the resources were being used by NMain.exe. It would appear that whenever I try to launch Norton, NMain.exe starts and ties up the system. I tried to shutdown the program, but was denied.

It seems to me that Norton Systemsworks has been hijacked. I ran Hijack-This and produced the following log.

Any help would be most appreciated.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

    Please download FixWareout

    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, Hijack This will launch.

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new Hijack This log.

    MFDnSC, isn't this a little odd: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Excite Toolbar] C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-606747145-152049171-725345543-1004\Dc10\Toolbar\ExLaunch.exe ?

Is that part of the Wareout infection? Just curious as I've come across several programs with simialr run paths in the last few weeks.

    I think it is legit

I have not tried to run Norton again yet to see if the problem still exists. I will do so after this email and let you know.

    Thanks for your help.

Hey, great news, Norton now runs again with no system lock-up. What was the problem? Was it a virus? Why did Norton or Spysweeper not pick it up when I ran scans in safe mode?

Is there anything else I have to do?

Than you very much for your help.

    Ozzie13.

Malware and an AV won't go after some of them - Surprised SpySweeper did not

Get all of these and/or verify you have the current versions

    SpywareBlaster 3.5 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
    SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
    AdAware SE 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
MS AntiSpy - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en (XP and W2K only)

DownLoad them (they are free), install them, check each for their
    definition updates
and then run AdAware, MS AntiSpy (W2k/XP) and Spybot, fixing anything
    they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Turn off restore points, boot, turn them back on – here’s how

    XP
