I installed a new driver in my gateway it is a 1997. Yet i am running windows xp. I have no sound. I did look in my computer and I looked under audio and also my speech files and there i looked to see if they were all working, there it said that they were. Yet i can not control the volume and the comp does not recognize that there is a sound device hooked up. it did work fine until i installed my new driver. Please help. i have done everything that i could think of. Thanks

The most likely cause is that you haven't installed the audio drivers. You will need to know (or get) the model number of your Gateway and visit their website to obtain the correct software. When you say you installed "a new driver" I assume you meant a new hard drive, yes? If so then you will definitely need the motherboard drivers.
