I have Win xp Home Edition which was just returned after having a motherboard replacement it worked ok for a week but when I booted up one day I didn't have any icons, the background was there but no icons. It booted ok in safe mode with icons. I tried a restore but no help. Short of doing a recovery does anybody have any ideas?

    Thanks, Bob

Right click your empty Desktop - Arrange Icons by - Show Desktop Icons.

I will add someone post that I saved.
Beyond that, it rather sounds like explorer.exe failed to start. If you find that to be the case,
use the Ctl/Alt/Delete keys together to bring up Taskmanager and then the File menu to select "New Task(Run)"

Simply type explorer.exe and click OK.
The Desktop should return to normal.

I have tried the things you suggest without success, The problem seems to be intermittent when I first bootup I get the wall paper minus icons & task bar then if I wait about 5 minutes the icons appear and the boot continues I scanned for mal ware and an infection was detected but after cleaning the problem was still there. Is it possible I still have virus problems?

I'll give you what I use to keep my PC clean.
    I have Windows Firewall
The hijack log that I wrote about will be for others to read.
    AVG antivirus

    Spyware Blaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

    Ad-Aware - http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/
    All downloads listed are free.

    1. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

    2. Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You will need the Recovery CD that came with your PC if any thing is found wrong.
    Don't insert unless asked for.
This takes about 35 minutes for me.

I also use Acronis 10 for a full recovery if I do get into trouble.
Sometimes I use System Restore to an earilier date.
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
