Cleaned up a Dell Dimension 4550 by doing a clean install of XP. Downloaded and reinstalled drivers, was able to connect to internet. Installed Service Pack 3 and lost connection to internet. Icon shows no problem with ethernet cable but I switched it just to be sure. Device manager shows no problems. I can connect wirelessly from my laptop. I've rebooted Comcast cable/phone modem and router. What am I missing?

Go to Control Panel>Internet Options>Connection tab>LAN button and put a tick into the "Automatically detect settings" box, click Apply and OK your way out. Sometimes Windows software needs to be led by the nose and that may just be enough to do the job.

    Reinstall the ethernet adapter driver.

The drivers at the Dell site for the Broadcom and Intel ethernet adapters are pretty old, so there's likely an updated version available for download.

What's the exact description of your ethernet adapter in the Device Manager?
