no internet, (avast boot scan, hijack)

    My brother gave me his computer to try to fix because he could no longer get on the internet.
    Windows Vista Home Premium >I will refer to as ‘vista’
    I found there was no antivirus program.
    All programs were transferred to vista via flash drive

    Installed and ran ccleaner
    Installed Lavasoft Ad-Aware but it would not run
    Installed Avast and ran boot scan with these results:

    HijackThis message:

    For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may not be able to fix this.

    If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

    Notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

    And press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis report sand delete them. Save the file as ‘hosts’ (with quotes), and reboot.

    For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose ‘run as administrator’.

    I got the internet thing worked out. I ran norton removal tool, and after removing norton, the internet started working again. Still having problems w/ hijack and spybot s&d cannot access hosts files, even in safe mode or w/ run at startup. any help will be appreciated. ( spybot fixed 280 items, but cannot fix 3 others. spybot also cannot immunize global hosts <ran as administrator>
