A problem has appeared to arise on my computer about 3 days ago. when iclick the start menu and try to bring up the all programs tab nothing comes up. i have tried clicking it and restarting my pc with no avail. i also noticed a warning message at startup that says a .exe file could not started because it is missing. maybe a virus?

If you will post the exact error message, someone may be able to tell you what the problem is, and how to correct it.
Have you run your AV program to check for a virus?

Start> Run> type: regsvr32 /i shell32.dll then click OK.
Restart your computer. If that doesn't help, you might need to check for spyware or virus and see what the error message reports missing as suggested above.

The message says:
ipwins.exe-Unable to locate component.
This Application has failed to start because MSCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

The best way is to post a HijackThis log and let an Log Expert to look at it for you.

Download Hijack This to your desktop
  • Extract Files
  • Open the file and click on the Hijack.exe
  • It will open and use the default path
  • Check do you wish an Icon
  • Click on Icon and choose "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
  • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
  • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

Download ComboFix to your Desktop.

Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done properly a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running as that may cause it to stall
