I recently re-installed XP on my MX6447 and lost all sound. I have the correct drivers (I believe) but it still reads an unknown PIC device. Whats weird is I had sound before and still have sound with it on my Ubuntu install without any problems whatsoever. Any help would be highly appreciated!

If you did not specifically back up and then re-install, or download then re-install, your drivers after you reinstalled Windows, you may not actually have the correct drivers installed anymore. I recently did a fresh Windows install, from an OEM Recovery Disc, and forgot to back up my drivers first. I lost almost everything, including my network card drivers and had to go to the manufacturer's site and download and reinstall about 20 drivers.

No, I didn't back-up and install, which looking back was a poor decision. I am removing and re-installing all of the drivers from gateways site hoping that perhaps that will solve the issue.

You shouldn't need to "remove" any existing drivers and it might be a really bad idea. Just install all the drivers that Gateway says should go into your computer and you should be fine. If any are duplicates, they'll either just overwrite the others or you'll be prompted to either overwrite or cancel the install.

I attempted install the drivers from gateways website and all failed installing or said the hardware was incompatible. Is there any way to force recognition of the card? It only says unknown device in the device manager.

Here is the support site for the Gateway MX6447 laptop.

Here is the product specifications list for it.

There is no MX6447 listed in the driver downloads section. All the model numbers are in increments of 10. It jumps from MX6440 to MX6450.

------------------------------------------------

Let's see which devices got their drivers installed and which devices didn't.

Go into the Device Manager and advise what's listed in

Display Adapters

Network Adapters

Other Devices

Sound Video And Game Controllers

According to what's listed in the Device Manager, it looks like the display adapter and wired/wireless adapters have their drivers installed and are working.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-click the PCI Device entry to open its properties window, then click the "Details" tab, then select "Hardware Id".

There will be a string that has VEN_####&DEV_#### as part of it.

Advise what the characters are that follow VEN_ and DEV_.

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_437B&CC_0403
Vendor Name: ATI Technologies Inc./Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
Chip Number: SB450
Chip Description: High Definition Audio Controller

It's my guess at this point that the device is Realtek High Definition Audio.

Still no luck, but I ran sfc /scannow and it found broken .dll files which perhaps is the problem. I will address this then report whether it works or not. Thanks for all the help so far!

Still no luck with the sound. I have attempted all the drivers from gateway and I am still reading an unknown PCI device and no sound card.

Go to the Windows Updates site and do a "custom" scan instead of an "express" scan.

Once it's done, see if a sound driver is listed in the drivers section that you can download and install.

I really don't know what else to advise you from here and without being able to have a "hands on" with it. :(
