    Hello!

I recently picked up a PC off a friend that he wasn't using, I formatted it and had to individually install all the chipset drivers as he didn't give me the motherboard CD, I'm having a problem with the sound, all the drivers are installed, I can get sound from my headphones but I cannot get sound when I plug in speakers.

Has anyone had a similar issue to this before?

    Thanks

Did you check your tray speaker Icon to make sure the Speaker isn't muted?
Did you double check to make sure the speaker wire is properly connected and in the right plug (an easy mistake to make since it can be a bit dark when looking at the back of the machine).

    Yes, nothing is muted.

And yes, I've made sure I plugged it into the right plug, I also tried plugging it into the front audio jack but I get nothing.

The only way I get sound is if I use my headphones, which seem to bypass the sound card?

    It's a VIA Vinyl AC'97 sound card.

This is the most current driver for it for Windows XP.

Download and save it in an empty folder on the desktop, then extract its contents into that folder, then double-click the "setup.exe" file to install it.

I'm getting the following error when trying to install it:

"1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime."

Can anyone please give me some suggestions? Has my sound card (onboard?) slowly died?

1)Can you borrow a sound card from a friend? and give this a try?
2)Did you re-check your Bios to make sure your On-board sound card was activated?

    Again, good luck

I checked my BIOS and all seems fine, the on-board sound card was set to auto?
