No sound?????Help Please

For a long time now I havent had sound on my computer and now its time to fix it. So with the help of the great people on this board I hope to resolve this. So if you could tell me where to start and what to do it will be very much appreciated. Thanks

Well I did the search for no sound as I was sarcastically asked to and dowloaded a couple things. PC Wizard 2004 and PC Check. still have no answers. I believe the sound card is VIA AC'97 . When I ran PC wizard and clicked on the multimedia icon nothing showed up. it just said analyzing system.

I downloaded the driver still nothing. What can I check to make sure it is installed properly? Is there a check list i can go through to correct this problem. I will remove the sound card if I have to to check it is connected properly. But I need help with that. So if there is anyone willing to help that would be great thanks.

Right click on MyComputer and select Properties>DeviceManager. Now under the section titled "Sound, Game ... Controllers" do you see anything listed? Any yellow exclamation marks?

I also have no sound on my computer I use windows 98. Unlike the previous writer I do not have a sound icon on my task bar. It had disappeared, and I cannot put it back because it is greyed out. I have also looked in device manager but there are no yellow marks. What do i do next?I am not very advanced.jane lizabeth

Ok checked out the device manager. there were no yellow exclamation points. I removed everything in the sound,video, and game controllers then rebooted everthing reintalled. Used Win98se disk. Still nothing. How do i get the sound icon in the toolbar to check for it being muted?

Hey guys i posted some new stuff last night, i dont know if it is help ful or not but I figured you guys would know best.

You will need to identify your motherboard since you have onboard sound. I believe PC Wizard should help there, or download Everest: http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

The Generic VIA driver does not always work with all motherboards so its best to make sure its been tested by the manufacturer of the motherboard.

Once you have the new driver you will want to uninstall the old driver. Go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS and remove any listings for audio/sound/AC'97 drivers. You may also need to go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager and remove the driver from their as well. Then reboot if asked and install the card using whatever drivers windows decides are right. Don't search for specific driver and let Windows install the card as unknown Multimedia Device if it doesn't have any drivers - which is what should happen. Then using the driver you find at the motherboard manufacturers website run the installation to install the new driver and reboot.
