I had my computer recently restored after a virus problem, and now that it's back up, everything seems to be fine - except for the audio. I cannot receive any sounds from my headphones or speakers plugged into the jacks; however, when i plug in the same pair of headphones with a USB adapter, i can hear sound. How can i fix this problem?

Keep in mind i'm a Windows XP User. I'm pretty sure the start>search bar is just a vista thing.

Download the latest audio drivers from the Dell Support website.

I couldn't find your make and model, otherwise I would have linked you to them.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Click Start.

In the search bar type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Click the + next to the pane Sound, Video and Game Controllers so it expands, showing all installed hardware.

Take a screenshot of this window and attach the file in your next post.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

If you have no internet connection on the problem PC, transferring the screenshot via flashdrive or CD to a working computer is possible. If this is not practical for you, a detailed listing of the requested information will suffice, along with reports of any ! ? or X's next to the entries.

5 drivers downloaded, 2 installed successfully, 1 installed with error, 2 not supported.

Still doesn't work. If it helps, when i go into the volume control panel, the only audio device that shows up is ATI HD Audio Rear Output. I don't see the headphones or anything, unless i have the USB adapter plugged in.

This is ridiculous. If you're trying to help someone, you don't give them 2 ideas and leave, sorry, but that isn't how it works. You either finish assisting me, or find someone else who will.

This is a completely voluntary site, I don't get paid to do this. I'm just another member like you, so there is no way it has to work. I'm a regular helper here, but the only obligation I have to help you is out of my own desire to help you.

You're allowed to bump a thread if you don't get a reply within 24 hours on your thread.

I have contacted some people, but I have yet to get any answers from anyone.

I still can't find your machine on the Dell Support site. Where did you find the latest drivers from?

Also, what is the default audio playback device selected?

    - Click Start.

    - Click Control Panel.

    - Click Sounds and Audio Devices.

    - Under the playback tab, make sure the appropriate playback device is selected.

I went to the dell support website. i clicked on drivers and downloads, and entered the service number G6DJ8C1.

Regarding the instructions, There are only 2 listed playback devices. One is the USB headset i am using, and the other is ATI HD Rear audio output or something of the sort. When switcched to the rear audio output, however, still no sound comes from the speakers.
