Can anyone tell me why this has happened? I have XP Pro and all of a sudden, after everything working fine for quite a while, I'm told I have no audio:

Could we get a similar thumb of your Device Manager with the relevant sound portions?

Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.

(or in Pro, Run: devmgmt.msc)

Your sound drivers need reinstalling. This is a pretty common problem, especially with onboard Realtek AC97 sound I've found.

what computer are you using,

if you built it yourself, then what motherboard does it have?

Here's the thumbnail. I hope it's what you wanted.
I tried re-installing the drivers--no joy. It does not work when I reboot.
Motherboard-Intel Corporation D815EFVU AAA51507-805 and no, I did not build it myself, it's a 3 year old Gateway.
I hope someone can figure this out for me.
Thanks!

Elvandil--did what you said, didn't work. There is something else strange. We have Windows Media Player 10. It works on my husbands logon, but not on mine. I tried adding another user and WMP 10 works there too. This is what comes up on my logon:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
