    Hello all

I am really in need of some help/advice.

I have a sony vaio laptop pcg-6122m with windows 7 and suddenly i have no sound. There is an error message in the bottom right of the screen which says "no audio output device is installed". It seemed to happen when i unplugged an external hard drive - was perfect b4 this and no prob since i bought laptop 1 year ago.

I searched the web for help and have had no success. Have tried to go through the device manager and the sound controller section - disabled it, enabled it - updated the hardware for the sound icon "bluetooth hands free audio" among other things and no success - v frustrating

Would really be v grateful for help

The first two things to try, at this point, if you haven't already, would be to restart your computer. If that doesn't fix it. Try using System Restore to restore your system to a time when you had audio. Access System Restore through Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools.

If neither of those things work, we'll need as much information as you can give us about any audio devices that are showing up in Device Manager. The "Manufacturer" from the "General" tab (in Device Manager -> yourDeviceName -> Properties) and the "Device Instance Id" from the "Details" tab, especially.

Also, you can go into Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs, Check the "Show Updates" checkbox, sort by "Date Last Used". This will allow you to see the dates that updates were installed. If you see any updates from around the time the trouble began, you could try uninstalling those updates.

Anyway, those are a few places to start. Hope it helps!

Thank you for your help but i am still in difficulty.

Have tried system restore to date b4 the problem arose and also getting rid of any updates from around the time the problem arose and still no luck. I still have the "no audio output device is installed" message and no sound !

Not sure how to get more info for you for the sound device manager. In the device manager under sounds, videos and game controllers all i see is "bluetooth handsfree audio" and when i right click on properties i get manufacturer=broadcom, - there is also a message in box below saying that the device is working properly !

    Grateful for your help

    Jamie
