I've viewed many posts here and elsewhere with similar symptoms and tried numerous fixes, but nothing works. Help me, Tech Support Guys, you're my only hope ...

A week ago Monday my Sony Vaio laptop with XP Home balked on bootup. No start button or taskbar, no icons and none of my automatic programs loaded. In Task Manager explorer.exe was missing. Starting it through New Task made the taskbar, buttons and icons appear for 10 seconds, then disappear. After a few such flashes, I was left with only my wallpaper. What's more, all of my System Restore points were gone, something I'd never knowingly allow. I also noticed in Task Manager that winlogon.exe uses 55 percent of my CPU but couldn't Google up a fix that worked for me. For the first couple of days I was able to get online, but not since the weekend, so I'm unable to use online scans.

Oh, and my laptop (1.73 CPU, 512 memory, BTW) didn't come with an XP CD. I was told by the salesman that it was in i386 for convenience. Sadly, several fixes require the CD, and I can see no way to navigate to the i386 folder. So much for convenience. The installation CD is in the mail from Sony. Meanwhile I'm seeing what I can do before having to reformat. My computer is vital to my work, so I can't just give up.

I remember doing routine maintenance with CCleaner and RegSupreme right before this happened, but both performed smoothly and neither has given me a problem in the past. I did play with Talisman, a portable desktop program that a friend sent me to try out. While searching for clues I noticed a Ta1isman file, so my (ahem!) friend likely infected me.

Having run scan after scan, I'm supposedly free of nasties, but the problem persists. So would some kind person here please help? I sure would appareciate it. Thank you in advance for looking at my HiJackThis log ...

False alarm! -- Sorry, Device Manager showed them all intact. I don't know what's up with Control Panel. Maybe it's a clue to what's happening?
