hi i'm an intermediate user mostly at work.. just enough to be dangerous...we grow grafted ornimental trees, so i'm in and out of the office... anyway we have a dell demention 8100 with win xp upgrade from me, it crashed..... i turn the comp. on and a message comes up 'press F1 to reboot or F2 for setup' the setup takes me to bios? it dosn't recognize the cd, only the floppy, but all i have is a win98 startup disk. do they make them for xp? the 98 disk will get me to a dos prompt and cd access but most files i try say they won't start in dos. we mainly use this comp as a work station networked to our other 2 comp (1 older win98se, 1 newer on xp) so reformating isn't a problem, but it won't do that either. any suggestions?

    Thanks

Welcome to TSG! You said you can get to the BIOS. Can you navigate through it? You need to find the Boot Order and change it to boot from the CD Rom drive first. Then boot from the A drive 2nd. The Harddrive last. Save and exit the BIOS. Open the CD Drive and put in an XP CD. It will boot from there and offer to overwrite your Windows files. This should fix your problem. It will look like it's installing from scratch, but if everything works, you should come back up with all data in tow. Hopefully, like nothing happened. Go back to the BIOS, if you want, and change the order of the boot back.

I can nav. the Bios, but the boot order only recognizes the A: drive, the others don't show up. The only way I can get to the cd's is to boot the 98 startup disk.

Don't know if this is exactly what your looking for, but you can download XP bootdisks at www.bootdisk.com That will at least load all the drivers you need to reinstall from CD.

You can boot from a Win98 disk. Then switch to the X drive, where X is your CD Rom. Then type setup and hit Enter. Of course you have the XP CD in the ROM. When Setup starts, it will detect your O/S and you should have options to re-write system files.
