Norton Antivirus & Spyware compatibility?

I would like to update my Norton Antivirus to 2004 edition from 2002. I am concerned that since it contains spyware safeguards it will confict with other programs I have; Adaware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Hijack This, CWshredder and ZoneAlarm 4.5. Has anyone experienced problems? I have been hit by the CoolWeb Search trojan About:Blank 4 times in three months!!

Any suggustions about futher safegards?

I'm afraid this doesn't help, but my son just installed Norton Antivirus 2004, and found some strange problems occured. He tells me that,a few minutes after logging on to the internet, the programme icon on the taskbar disappears and that Norton A-V can't then be activated. I suggested that he download most of the spyware that you already have, which he did, and, while this did detect more trojans and diallers, it did not fix this particular problem with Norton.

I have NAV 2003 with ZA 4.5, SpywareBlaster, AdAware, Spybot an anti-trojan and another Registry monitoring tool, all playing happily with no obvious problems on my '98 box.

NAV and my anti-trojan program both seem to be trying to combat what they define as 'adware' but, as Spybot and AdAware are not 'real time' scanners like the other two programs, there do not seem to be any conflicts.

As far as Fitz problem is concened, I believe that there are a number of 'baddies' that disable security programs, including the Gaobot family of worms or trojans. Perhaps his son should post a HJT log in a new thread?.

I appreciate the feedback Togg! I will go ahead with my update! I suppose Symantec would support the new version of NAV better than 2002, So if I experience difficulties or conflicts, I'll search their site.

What registry monitoring tool are you refering to? ;)

Fitz, I agree. Post a new Hijack This log in a new thread. It will get lost here. we're already 3 pages back from the security home page.

I have The Cleaner anti trojan program by Moosoft and that includes TC Monitor, which, as its name suggests, monitors the Registry. I also have a freeware tool called Startup Monitor which notifies me of any additions to that area;http://mlin.net/

As you will see, Mike Lin's website doesn't appear to have been updated recently but SM still pops up regularly when I run my Windows cleanup program, which deletes index.dat files at startup.

Both programs put up warnings at certain times but they do not appear to conflict with each other.

I also have HJT but, as it is not a real time scanner either, it does not conflict with anything else.

As for Norton, I think I read somewhere that they have stopped supporting 2000/01 but I am not sure about 2002. Their website is not the easiest to navigate, as you would see if you searched 'NAV problems' here! However, in seven years of using NAV, I have only had one problem with a bad definitions update which needed a reinstall to correct.

Check their web page so that you uninstall previous NAV..I didn't when I installed a trial version of NIS & had problems. I believe you have to uninstall 2002 before installing 2004. I can run adaware, spybot, spyware blaster, HJT, CWShredder without a problem with NIS. I updated my daughters NAV2002 & she hasn't had a problem..my OS is WIN98se, hers is WINME. Hope this helps...Good luck

I have sucessfully updated NAV 2004! :D After install, I ran a new scan and 4 hijack threats were found and deleted!! It was worth any potential hassle just to have NAV pick up those bad boys. Symantec does not support NAV 2002. It was a driving motivation for the update. Their site IS difficult to get around and I too have had to reinstall because version 2000 conflicted with some WinME files. By and large, I have successfully removed most virus infections without hassle.

Does Startup Monitor or The Cleaner catch and remove bugs in addition to Spybot ot Adaware? Do you have more info on the Cleaner? :)

As far as I know, Startup Monitor doesn't 'remove' anything but simply alerts you to attempts to make changes to the startup menu. If you aren't upgrading, installing or uninstalling a program when you get a warning then you probably shouldn't allow the change so nothing gets added rather than being added, like spyware, and removed later.

Obviously, if you routinely allow programs to auto update themselves (something many like to do now) the change may be innocent. Nothing is allowed to update itself on my machine!

Here is a link to the Moosoft site;http://www.moosoft.com/index.php I am using The Cleaner because it ran OK on this old machine after a Tauscan trial made it very unstable. The Cleaner does not get rave reviews on sites like Wilders.org but, as I've paid for it, I'm keeping it! Lots of people rate something called TDS so, unless it's very expensive, you might want to try that first.

Like Norton, The Cleaner runs permanenly in the background and should stop undesirables on the way in and let you choose what to do about them. As I said, Moosoft and Norton have started using adware definitions but I don't think either of them have found one yet. Since I got SpywareBlaster, AdAware and Spybot have been more or less redundant too.
