I get the screen asking if i want to install or try ubuntu but after that it loads for a while and i get an initramfs screen which say 'Unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem'. I have read several forums which ask to use usb 2.0 but that does not work. Also my BIOS is insydeh20 and is locked so I cant go to advanced settings and change the SATA mode to AHCI.

Use the 'try ubuntu' option if you haven't already.
What media is Ubuntu on ?
How come the Bios is locked ?

I have used 'try ubuntu' option as well. I get the same initamfs screen with the same error - 'Unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem'.
I am booting ubuntu from a USB stick. It works fine in other computer. However, it doesnt work in my laptop.
The insydeh20 BIOS is default BIOS which came with my laptop and it only has a few options that we can change. I dont have access to advanced options. Hence, I cant change the SATA mode.

I tried all 3 USB slots, but none of them work with ubuntu. I tried using a bootable windows 7 and that worked fine.

try testing the flashstick in another computer? if available, borrow a computer from a friend or colleague for a few minutes and check that your flashstick can boot it.

I checked it in another computer and it worked fine. I tried several versions of ubuntu including 12.04 14.04 and 16.04 but none of them worked in my laptop

the locked bios is likely to be playing a part in preventing the install. but there are some machines that have a setting to set os restrictions, something along the lines Restrict OS installation. the options being Windows/Other. switch over to Other (if available).

also, checkout fast boot and try disabling. though, options for 32bit version of ubuntu could be worth trying.

I dont see any option which says 'Restrict OS installation'.
Also, the insyde BIOS does not give me an option to disable or enable 'Fast Boot'. I have tried 32 bit version as well, didnt work.

without the options and the version of notebook (r700 tx) the official Ubuntu site does not favour an ubuntu install on this version. it says ubuntu would not work well.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/certification...=Desktop&category=Laptop&level=Any&vendors=HP

also running any version, (live or install) of linux for your machine would be seen on the site named, Linux on HP Laptop and Notebook Computers. but there isnt a single entry for hp 15 notebooks. unless ive overlooked it a search can be made here:
    http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/hp.html

the possibility of unlocking the bios may be out there on YT but its not worth it, if the official feedback says ubuntu/linux would not run well as it stands today.

Looks like I am stuck with windows now. Guess i should wait for the windows 10 bash update now. Hopefully, that will be as good as ubuntu. However, I do see that ubuntu is supported on hp 15 laptops at this link :
    http://www.ubuntu.com/certification...=Desktop&category=Laptop&level=Any&vendors=HP

Anyways, thank you for your help. Looks like I will never be able to run ubuntu on my laptop without flashing the BIOS. Will be careful while purchasing laptops next time.
