not responding

when playing games or just anything on my computer i freeze up for a short time and the program will say NOT RESPONDING after the name of the window i am on what causes this when i am playing a game like poker or other card games i lose my turn

System specs? Has this recently started or an ongoing problem? Have you made any changes recently? New hardware or programs?
