    Go through the following steps-
1>You should disable or stop some of the services which run back
ground, start->run-> type 'services.msc' remove few of the services. Its
better to have a look at this site and know which service is important and
    which is not http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

2> Increase the size of Virtual Memory to atleast twice your RAM, if you
have 256 MB RAM then set the Virtual memory to 512 or more. To do this
right click on My Computer and select Properties, select the Advanced Tab
and click on Setttings on Performance window. Click on Advanced tab and
select Change. Also set the Virtual Memory to other drive and not on root
drive like C:. Click on the drive to where the Virtual Memory should be
saved, click on Custom Size and enter both the maximum and minimum value
same like 512 and click on Set, click on OK, then Apply and then OK.

3> Use a registry cleaning software to clean the Registry and make the
registry size smaller and compact. You can use a software named "RegVac"
from superwin software which is available at
    http://www.superwin.com/regvac.htm to clean the Registry.

4> Also regularly defrag your Hard disk so that the most commonly run
application will be placed at the beggining of the disk and run chkdsk to
check for any problem with the file system.
