I have an expensive gaming notebook which is barely 6 months old and the ports for USB or the attached microphone and camera no longer work. It said something about a kernel error and restarted and the ports haven't worked since. I am on windows 10 ( recently updated from windows 8.1) It is an ASUS model number GL551JW. I really do not know what other information to give. Need to fix ASAP.

In that case, roll back to Windows 8.1 and see if the USB ports work.
If they do, hold off on updating to Windows 10 for a few months.

If 6 months old will still be under warranty so send it back for repair.

Did the Usb ports ever work in Windows 10 ?

First let's see if it is a hardware problem or a windows/software problem. Boot the system with a linux live usb/dvd. If it [usb ports] work under linux, you know the hardware is ok. If it will not boot from the usb, then you know the hardware is the problem.
Most [however not all] asus laptops use the esc key to access the quick boot menu. Read your manual to see if yours uses the esc key or a different key/key combo.

Once we know if it is hardware or software related, the issue becomes easier to fix.
If the problem does turn out to be hardware, you can return the laptop under warranty.
