How did it happen? Did it fail gradually or all at once? Have you used an external monitor? How do you know that it has actually failed?

Get a decent torch and shine it at the screen when the laptop is on, if it is only the backlight / inverter board you should still be able to see the normal image, but it will be feint.

You could try opening it up to make sure a simple connector hasn't become disconnected, although laptops often don't take too well to being dropped!

Exactly what model Toshiba Satellite is it?

Hey, Bubba! The first thing you should do is to use Tanis' flashlight test to verify that your laptop still has a working display. Until you've done that, you can't assume a bad inverter is the cause of the black screen.

The next question to ask yourself is whether or not you have the patience and expertise to attempt a repair. This is the best site I know for DIY Toshiba laptop repair information. You should be able to find your model on the list and see what's involved in a fix.

Finally, if you still want parts, try: http://www.lcdparts.net/Default.aspx
    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Laptop,Inverters.aspx

    or check out eBay.
