I've noticed this bug out of the corner of my eye for years, but only last week did I actually completely see it in action. When I save a file in Notepad by pressing "Save", my cursor will jump backwards a couple characters (including to the previous line where applicable). It only happens with the first save for a session, not with further saves and will only happen again if I exit Notepad, click on the file again, start typing or just put the cursor somewhere and press "Save" again. I've noticed a few mentions of this in Google, but never an answer if its a known bug with Windows XP or something else.

It's possible that you have some malware on the machine as that can cause odd symptoms.

Please go here to download HijackThis.
    • To the right of the green arrow under HijackThis downloads click on the Executable button and download the HijackThis.exe file to your desktop.
    • Double-click the HijackThis.exe file on your desktop to launch the program. If you get a security warning asking if you want to run this software because the publisher couldn't be verified click on Run to allow it.
    • Click on the Scan button. The scan will not take long and when it's finished the resulting log will open automatically in Notepad.
    • Click on the Save log button and save the log file to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your post.
Please do not fix anything with HijackThis unless you are instructed to do so. Most of what appears in the log will be harmless and/or necessary.

I notice a similar but smaller jump back on another computer i'm pretty sure has no malware on it, so that might not be it. I normally check to see if my problem exists on two unconnected, unrelated computers. I noticed this on a computer at the library, and then the one at my mother's house and when I got back home, I noticed it on mine. Aside from the standard XP applications, None of these computers had any programs shared between them, not even Firefox. I have not noticed any abnormal behavior shared between these three computers.

Just before you posted, I checked the similar threads at the bottom, but they all seemed to be about laptops.

I'm not 100% sure if it happens in WordPad because RTF files open up in OpenOffice Writer for me and I do not see this issue in OpenOffice Writer or during the first save in WordPad. Nor have I noticed anything extraordinarily abnormal in any other program and nothing is found by MBAM or AVG.

Searches around the internet largely point to the fact that this could just be a minor bug with Word Wrap in a program Microsoft really pays no attention to anymore, like that famous "Bush Hid the Facts" bug everyone noticed many years ago. From the results I got, this seemed to have been a thing from Windows 2000 through Vista.

Can someone with XP write a couple lines (including breaks. Like a paragraph) in Notepad with Word Wrap on, save it, open it, write some more and save it again? I think it might be common since i've noticed it on three computers, and i'm leaning towards a "solved, its just a little bug" thing.

Thanks for the concern, though. I actually wound up downloading HijackThis off of CNET on another computer I saw this on. I can read a HijackThis log enough to know what's what, and I saw nothing that looked malicious anywhere on it. I clicked "Info On Selected Item" on some stuff and Googled others, and nothing looked malicious to me.

Lastly, I can confirm what it said on one website: That this happens only when Word Wrap is on and that it depends on how many characters are typed. For instance, a jump in a 14KB Notepad file is going to be more than one in a 1KB file, where the jump is like 3 characters. No mention of this from the past several years claims this to be malicious. As I mentioned before, its probably just a bug with Word Wrap.

I did your test and get the same behaviour. The cursor jumped back 9 characters in my test.

It's not something that I'll lose any sleep over though. I guess you can mark it "solved".
