I'm having problems with 125029.exe, so I read a bunch of posts and saw that i needed to download Hijackthis to get help. I did that and everything was fine until i needed to use Notepad in order to post my log thing on here. I don't know how to re-install notepad and i even went to microsoft.com for help but they didn't know how to help me. I tried using Wordpad instead but that doesnt seem to work. How do I get notepad to work? I'm using Windows XP. Thanks!

Did you save the log? If so, what path did you follow for the log? What format did you save the log in? Did you delete notepad? Do you have any other word type programs?

Try copying Notepad.exe back.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winfiles.html
Notepad.exe is in 3 locations on your PC
C:\WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS\system32
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Note: dllcache is only accessible if you uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) in Control Panel - Folder options.

Or, you could rename a notepad replacement of your choice to 'notepad.exe' (I use Metapad) and copy it to all 3 locations!

Yeah sounds like you have got something. And maybe even disabled your notepad. What you can do if Listers way doesn't help is right click the log file and choose open with, then choose MS Word if you have it or Wordpad. It should work in on of those.

One word.... OUCH! Oh you are using Ares... that's what happens when you use P2P programs...

Anyways, go to www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html and download & install the program. This will prevent any reinfection. Make sure you update the program before continuing. (You can update it via the Update section)

go back to HJT and do system scan only. Then check these for following (you may want to print this :)) and press fix

Also, go to www.majorgeeks.com and under Spyware section on the left, download and install Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and CWShredder. These will get any remains left behind. Remember to update them too.

reboot your machine then when it starts loading right at the beginning, tap F8 until you get a menu. Select Boot to Safe Mode.

I couldn't find the WINTOOLS folder or the WEBSAVINGSFROMEBATES folder. I went to add/remove programs and tried to remove the websavingsfromebates program but a WJVEIW ERROR popped up and said: ERROR: could not locate Java Virtual Machine: class not registered.

Sorry WinTools is in C:\Program Files\Common Files :( looks like we need to do it again. Most of the stuff is the same as the last time. When you delete the them in HJT and go into safe mode, delete the WinTools folder and also delete the WINUPDATExxxxx.exe files. I believe they are in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. Make sure you can see hidden files by going to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab > choose Show hidden files and folders.

also try this for the websearch toolbar, go into internet explorer, under tools there is a button call manage add-ons, and then you should be able to disable it. thats helped me before. it should come up with a message saying that it wont be disable till the next time you restart internet explorer. just exit out and go back into manage add-ons and it should be gone.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad.

Go here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/lopremover.exe and download the uninstaller.
Close all browser windows and run the uninstaller.

Download this tool
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
Right click on the file and choose install.

Do Not run it yet.

Save it to your desktop.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Now disconnect from the internet, turn off or disconnect your modem.

Click Start - Run - and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc)

Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.
After you have done all three, exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Now repeat the same for this one:
WebSeach Toolbar support NT service (TBPSSvc)

Run KillBox.exe.

Select the Delete on Reboot option.

In the Full Path of File to Delete field paste each of the following bolded items and click the red circle with the white X in it, when it asks you to delete the file on reboot, click Yes, when it asks you to reboot, click No.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools\WToolsB.dll
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\PIB.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\TBPS.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\TBPSSvc.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar\toolbar.dll

Close killbox.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Toolbar
C:\Program Files\Ares

Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner.

Reboot.

Download AdAware SE Personal: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html/

Save it to your desktop.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html
Don't run it yet.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate21276307[1].exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate23074983[1].exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate89298381[1].exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Restart in Safe Mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now look in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and delete the file if found.

winupdate21276307[1].exe
winupdate23074983[1].exe
winupdate89298381[1].exe

Repeat for every profile on the machine.

Run KillBox.exe.

Select the Delete on Reboot option.

In the Full Path of File to Delete field paste each of the following bolded items and click the red circle with the white X in it, when it asks you to delete the file on reboot, click Yes, when it asks you to reboot, click No.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools\WToolsB.dll
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe

Close killbox.

Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner.

Reboot and post another log.
