Ok winamp, AIM, shockwave, windows media, all that and more does not work. As well as my AVG and Spybot, although my zone alarm is still working. I keep getting a message telling me that my 'winmm.dll' is corrupt. I've replaced it with a new one, reinstalled all of the above programs, and nothing is working. I also tried to reinstall directx but it wouldn't even do it. Any suggestions? Oh i've had my hijackthis log looked at and apparently it's fine.

yeah the online ones don't work either, they apparently still need that file. Any other suggestions?????

I don't think it's the file though, it has to be something else. I just completely wiped that file off of my harddrive and then put a new one on and it still gave me the error that the file can't start. It must be whatever starts the file up, does anyone know anything about certain programs or other files that deal with the dll's?

I don't know if it will help but i got a program called registry mechanic and it's running right now, already found 249 problems, maybe it's related....hopefully...who knows....

Winmm.dll is needed for multimedia apps.

    Try these two things.

    ExeFix08 http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html

If no joy, then let us have a look at things.

Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it. To run, click the “Scan” button. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point). Copy and paste the results in your next post. IF you happen to be using a proxy server, please mention it in your post. Most of what it finds is harmless, so do not do anything yet. Someone will be glad to help you sort out any of the baddies that may be in there.

Do you know of any programs like that which are not DOS based. For some reason whenever a program tries to run into DOS it says that my command.com file can't be found, but it's in the C drive and in the windows folder. If i click on the file it goes to the command prompt but it still won't run it from there. Anyways, here's the hijack log...

Oh and for some reason whenever i try to search on yahoo for information relating to this it freezes. But only if i type in 'winmm.dll file cannot start', really weird, i can search for anything else fine but not that...

I found this as well, but i'm not too sure what to do, and i don't have my windows 98 cd..

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

To fix any problems caused by this line:

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\windows\system\mswsosp.dll' missing

    Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

    Reboot into normal mode

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

    Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

    Thanks

Run the Find command and search for Winmm.dll.
It should be in \windows\system on Win98
