Now I want to salvage the files from a broken iBook.

    The hard disk isn't broken. It's the 'main board' according to he Genius Bar fella.
    Has anybody done this? Taken out the hard disk and connected it to..... something?

    Take apart guides are available at iFixit.

    Get a good 2.5" enclosure and put the drive in it and you're good to go. Get one with both USB 2.0 and Firewire.

    I recommend Macally.
