I have an NT machine and when I ping it i get the reply 'hardware error'. The green light is on at the back of the machine as well as on the hub, so maybe that eliminates the cord. Also there's no connection to the network and anyone who logs on does so because of cached profiles etc. Any ideas please? Thanks.

Are you pinging 127.0.0.1? If you are and it is returning Hardware error, then you need to replace it, because there is a probably a bad chip on it.

Thank you Brooks for the quick reply. I get a reply from pinging the ip address of the machine, but not the loopback address 127.0.0.1. Nor can I ping the router or server. So perhaps I am looking at replacing the NIC. Thanks again for the confirmation of my suspicions.
