For a few months all the Office tools I use (Work, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) start with a long pause, 10 to 20 sec for the tool and another for the actual document. If I start the Office tools from a desktop icon it appears in under a sec, as it should on my system. The effect delay is the same if I'm on online or offline. Other applications, like Quicken, don't have a pause.

The only "recent" change has been to replace an old Lexmark Z54 printer with a Dell A940. Interesting feature the Dell A940 is that it was made by Lexmark, uses Lexmark ink and most of the software the old Z54 did. They just changed the ink cardtridge shapes, duh. NotePad from MS doesn't have a startup lag.

It seems to me like some "option or feature" in Windows Explorer is timing out before it will pop the tool and then the document. I run with MS OS and Office automatic updates OFF so my system should be XP SP2 with few if any system updates. However, AOL and the printer / camera software I use, DELL and HP, do get updated from time to time.

I moved off Symantec (Nortons) for the first time in almost 20 years to go with Kaspersky in early '08. Have used Lavasoft AdWare Plus for 2 years. The HijackThis listing shows two entries from Symantec, one with file missing. I guess Symantec didn't do a clean uninstall, but that is one of the reasons I moved to another vendor. Other then those I verified what I could to make sure all references are to valid verified sources. I didn't see anything in the Hijackthis output that looked suspicious but I've been retired from the IT world for over 10 years.

Here is the Hijackthis listing for my system:

Thanks for any advice that can be supplied. I know 10 to 30 seconds is a small amount of time to some but it is so long for our usual system response that both my wife and I often get multiple document images started since we say - " nothing there" I guess I didn't double click.
