I am facing a severe problem with office SP installer and I am not sure, if it is a virus or some problem with my XP/Office.

I have XP-Home and Office 2000. The prompt for installing SP2 keeps on popping up every now and then, I dont have the SP installtion package on my machine(nor do I want to), so I kill the process, but some how this installtion prompt keeps on coming again and again. In the task manager I see Offprov.exe and Offprov10.exe running.

    I need advice and suggestions,

    Thanks,

    Shail

    OFFPROV - OFFPROV.EXE - Process Information
    Process File: OFFPROV or OFFPROV.EXE
Process Name: Office Data Provider for WBEM

    Description:
OFFPROV.EXE is a process which belongs to the Microsoft Office. This program is non-essential process to the running of the program, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
For More Information About OFFPROV.EXE - Get WinTasks 5 Pro Now!

    Recommendation for OFFPROV.EXE:
Not a critical component, but see the information above before disabling it.
To get control over your running programs we suggest WinTasks 5 Pro

Thanks for the response, but it does not solve my problem. I am not sure why the office installer keeps on prompting every other hour. Is there a way to permanently shut it down (of course without uninstalling office software)

    BTW Welcome to TSG.

Sorry I do not know how to shut it off, but maybe someone else might.

I'll see if I can get you some help.

Is it SP2 for Office, or SP2 for Windows that is prompting you?

FWIW, the office installer will pop up if you clean your machine to vigorously. There are apparently some files in your user profile that appear to cleaning utilities to be junk or temp files. I know I've had this happen after running TempClean, so I don't do that anymore. :)
